Dr. W. Gaines Cumbie, D.O. is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee joint preservation and replacement. He is known for an approach to care that emphasizes advanced, muscle-sparing techniques, individualized treatment plans, and helping patients return to an active lifestyle as efficiently as possible.
Dr. Cumbie earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio—one of the world’s most respected centers for orthopedic care. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement at Total Joint Specialist, where he developed expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques, robotic-assisted joint replacement, and modern joint preservation strategies.
At the core of Dr. Cumbie’s practice philosophy is patient-centered care. He takes the time to understand each patient’s goals and designs treatment plans tailored to their anatomy, lifestyle, and expectations.
His knee and hip surgical approach focuses on muscle-sparing, minimally invasive, and patient-specific techniques, along with meticulous wound-closure methods aimed at reducing scarring and improving cosmetic outcomes.
Dr. Cumbie also offers Pure Motion™ muscle-sparing knee and hip replacement, an advanced approach designed to support faster recovery and earlier mobility, allowing patients to walk immediately after surgery and return home the same day.
A third-generation physician, Dr. Cumbie takes pride in building long-standing, trust-based relationships with his patients and the communities he serves. He is originally from Montgomery, Alabama, where his father practiced oncology and internal medicine, and his grandfather served as a family medicine physician in Andalusia, Alabama. Dr. Cumbie lives in Peachtree City, Georgia, with his wife and three young children. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, hiking, playing pickleball, and traveling.
Dr. Cumbie provides care to patients in his Georgia office locations in Fayetteville, LaGrange, and Stockbridge, and performs surgery at the Georgia Bone & Joint ambulatory surgery center in Newnan, Georgia. He also welcomes patients from across the country for both in-person and virtual consultations, including second opinions.
